HSC music students have to look at music written in the last 25 years with an Australian focus as their mandatory topic. They need to research who each of the concepts of music work within a composition and they also need to be able to compare with other core topic works. There are many works which fit this criteria but music teachers have a hard time keeping up with new repertoire. Nathan offers a HSC workshop that looks at this particular topic. These workshops explore particular works of music (saxophone works) which are fun and interesting to research as well as offer similar repertoire suggestions for other instruments. In the workshops, Nathan covers the following:
Background of piece and composer (as well as influences).
Extended instrumental techniques through explaination and demonstration.
A detailed analysis of works with handouts.
Comparisons between other works.
Related material and repertoire for various instruments.
Performance of the work.
For the last few years Nathan has given workshops for International Grammar School and Sydney Girls High School Music 2 and Extension classes which have always had excellent results in music. In 2007 & 2008, Nathan was also involved in the Inter-District Selective Schools Music Seminar where he did a presentation on this workshop for Music Head Teachers of many leading selective secondary schools in New South Wales.
